A Screw that Never Rusts

I used a screwdriver to make a hand-cranked prayer wheel. On its surface are cut-out characters imitating Tibetan script, “Never Rust.”

A screw is the most basic unit that connects industrial components. In China, the “screw” is a positively charged metaphor, often symbolising dedication and sacrifice for national construction.

A screwdriver, in turn, is the tool used to tighten screws; turning it becomes a way of tightening the order to which these screws are bound.

Turning a prayer wheel is a simple religious practice. In the era of serfdom, many Tibetan people were illiterate, so scriptures were placed inside prayer wheels; one full rotation was considered equivalent to reciting the sutra once. The prayer wheel is believed to purify negative karma and accumulate merit. Those who have faith turn it with devotion, again and again.

I found a correspondence between these two kinds of “rotation.” A similar structure of belief allows each subject, unconsciously, to use its own small force to tighten a certain order, with each minor subject automatically revolving within a larger social body.
