Press Release /
“In ancient times, it was said that those with slanted eyes were ‘people with vertical vision’. Interpretations vary among scholars: one view compares them to horse-like eyes; another to dragon-like eyes, while some suggest they resemble the appearance of ordinary humans. One interpretation sees them as eyes of quiet observation; another as expressions of sidelong scrutiny… The inability to define their form with certainty has its own reason.”
This is a spatial dialogue project to be developed between two residency sites in Hangzhou and Florence. It establishes a conceptual passage connecting the two locations, proposing a practice of working and co-existing that is grounded in, yet also exceeds, physical space. Artists based in the Hangzhou and Florence residencies will adopt a “tilted” perspective, interpreting spatial differences through the divergence between the two concrete sites, and in turn revealing a spatial landscape shaped by difference itself.

Two artists from China came together through research, exploring relationships between things in a reverse direction. This process of reverse deduction became a way of understanding and deconstructing their surrounding environment. Through ongoing dialogue, they established a collaboration with another residency space in Hangzhou, where five Chinese artists were simultaneously undertaking residency projects. Together, they attempted to understand and interpret the places inhabited by others through images and descriptions, ultimately seeking to construct a channel between the two sites that could transcend physical space.

We often needed to have remote discussions with the team members in Italy, While we were working during the day, their hours were well into the wee hours. So time differences became our initial common focus. We tried to translate the temporal gap into a spatial "angle" of time zones. Since the time difference between Italy and China constituted 105 ° , we made the corner of the Italian exhibition hall tilted 105 ° in the Chinese exhibition hall. The floor pattern was taken in the collaborative Italian art space and transmitted to China, where it was printed and pasted one-by-one.
